My Hidden Disability Is Chiari Malformation

I live with Chiari Malformation Type 1, a neurological condition that many people have never heard of, yet it can have a significant impact on everyday life.

With Chiari Type 1, the lower part of the cerebellum extends through the opening at the base of the skull towards the spinal canal. Symptoms can vary greatly from one person to another, and their severity can change over time.

For me, one of the most difficult aspects of living with Chiari is that I can look completely fine on the outside while dealing with symptoms that are not always visible.

Chiari can cause headaches, neck pain, dizziness, balance problems, fatigue, brain fog, numbness and tingling, vision problems and other neurological symptoms.

Living with a hidden condition has taught me to listen to my body, respect my limitations and recognise that rest is sometimes necessary. It has also taught me resilience and a deeper appreciation for the things I am able to do.

Chiari does not define who I am. It is simply something I live with.

Not all disabilities are visible.

This September, I am proud to raise awareness of Chiari Malformation and the people living with it every day. Whether you live with Chiari yourself, support someone who does, or are hearing about it for the first time, understanding and awareness can make a difference.

You may not always see what someone is experiencing, but that does not mean their struggle is not real.
